{"id":946,"date":"2018-04-26T21:31:57","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T01:31:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gopplaybook.com\/?p=946"},"modified":"2018-05-01T21:34:58","modified_gmt":"2018-05-02T01:34:58","slug":"speaker-ryan-forces-out-house-chaplain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gopplaybook.com\/?p=946","title":{"rendered":"Speaker Ryan Forces Out House Chaplain"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"styles-headerBasic--3czk2 css-uvwqfx e111kb3g0\">\n<p class=\"css-ua6igs ejekc6u0\">By\u00a0<span class=\"css-1baulvz\" style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif; font-size: 16px;\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"styles-bylineTimestamp--2J2fe styles-toneNews--29Vp_\"><time class=\"css-3u3suj eqgapgq0\" datetime=\"2018-04-26\">April 26, 2018<\/time><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"StoryBodyCompanionColumn css-1bytduc emamhsk0\">\n<div class=\"css-xk4wzv emamhsk2\">\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">WASHINGTON \u2014 House Speaker Paul Ryan has forced out the House chaplain, Reverend Patrick Conroy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">Conroy had served as the chamber&#8217;s chaplain since 2011 but offered his resignation last week at Ryan&#8217;s urging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">Conroy&#8217;s resignation letter said he was offering to step down at Ryan&#8217;s request, calling his seven years of House service &#8220;one of the great privileges of my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">Ryan spokeswoman Ashlee Strong would not reveal the speaker&#8217;s reasons for forcing Conroy out. A top Democrat, Rep. Joe Crowley of New York, said he believes it was because of a prayer Conroy gave during last fall&#8217;s tax debate urging that lawmakers not &#8220;pick winners and losers&#8221; but spread its benefits equitably.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">Strong said that was not the reason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">Lawmakers such as Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., said they were in the dark as to why &#8220;Father Pat&#8221; was eased out. Boyle, a Catholic, said he did not know that Conroy was ousted until hearing it from media accounts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"StoryBodyCompanionColumn css-1bytduc emamhsk0\">\n<div class=\"css-xk4wzv emamhsk2\">\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., penned a letter to Ryan asking for more information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">&#8220;The sensitive nature of this situation requires a description of the process followed to arrive at the decision and a justification for that decision,&#8221; Connolly wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">The offices of Ryan and top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., offered differing accounts. Ryan spokeswoman Strong said Ryan consulted with Pelosi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1psrv1x e2kc3sl0\">Pelosi&#8217;s office said that she made it clear that she disagreed with the decision and said she only heard positive comments from lawmakers about Conroy.
