{"id":93,"date":"2018-02-25T12:09:59","date_gmt":"2018-02-25T17:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gopplaybook.com\/?p=93"},"modified":"2018-02-25T12:09:59","modified_gmt":"2018-02-25T17:09:59","slug":"senate-approves-new-russia-sanctions-but-trump-chooses-to-ignore-the-needs-for-a-safer-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gopplaybook.com\/?p=93","title":{"rendered":"Senate approves new Russia sanctions but Trump chooses to ignore the needs for a Safer America"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"body-text\" class=\"zn zn-body-text zn-body zn--idx-0 zn--ordinary zn-has-multiple-containers zn-has-20-containers\" data-eq-pts=\"xsmall: 0, medium: 460, large: 780, full16x9: 1100\" data-vr-zone=\"zone-1-0\" data-zone-label=\"bodyText\" data-containers=\"20\" data-zn-id=\"body-text\" data-eq-state=\"xsmall medium large\">\n<div class=\"l-container\">\n<div class=\"el__leafmedia el__leafmedia--sourced-paragraph\">\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\"><cite class=\"el-editorial-source\">(CNN)<\/cite>The Senate on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to enact new sanctions against Russia and make it difficult for President Donald Trump to lift them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">In a rare moment of bipartisan unity, the Senate voted 97 to two to approve the sanctions, with only Republicans Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky voting against.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">The Russia sanctions amendment was added to an Iranian sanctions bill on the Senate floor after a deal was struck earlier this week between the Republican and Democratic heads of the Senate Foreign Relations and Banking Committees.<\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--tablet\" data-ad-text=\"show\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad ad--epic ad--desktop\" data-ad-text=\"show\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The vote was overshadowed by Wednesday&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/14\/politics\/alexandria-virginia-shooting\/index.html\">shooting at a congressional Republican baseball practice\u00a0<\/a>\u2014 two senators were there, Rand Paul and Jeff Flake of Arizona \u2014 but the Senate kept on its schedule, and the bill is expected to be passed by the end of the week.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"media__caption el__storyelement__title\"><span class=\"el__storyelement__header\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/06\/13\/politics\/senate-russia-sanctions-deal\/index.html\">Senators reach Russia sanctions deal<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">The new Russia sanctions would create a congressional review process if the executive branch eases current sanctions. It also imposes new sanctions in a number of categories, including those &#8220;conducting malicious cyber activity on behalf of the Russian government&#8221; and &#8220;supplying weapons to the Assad regime.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__read-all\">\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Democrats and many Republicans have been pushing for the Senate to adopt a new Russia sanctions measure in response to Russia&#8217;s interference in the 2016 US elections and after reports the Trump administration is considering easing sanctions on Moscow.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;This bipartisan agreement to stiffen sanctions is a significant step forward,&#8221; said Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a New Hampshire Democrat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;We need this amendment because we have no time to waste,&#8221; said Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona. &#8220;The United States of America needs to send a strong message to Vladimir Putin and any other aggressor that we will not tolerate attacks on our democracy.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Republican senators said Tuesday they expected Trump to sign the bill, which will still need to be passed in the House before it goes to the President&#8217;s desk.<\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\">\n<div class=\"img__preloader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\"><strong>Trump administration officials<\/strong>, <strong>however, have expressed some concerns with the package. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told a Senate panel Tuesday he was wary of actions that could interfere with the administration&#8217;s efforts to improve relations with Russia.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">&#8220;What I wouldn&#8217;t want to do is close the channels off,&#8221; Tillerson said.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\">Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker of Tennessee was initially hesitant to pass a new Russia sanctions bill, but he played a key role in drafting the final language.
