Station managers around the country are directed to work them into the broadcast over a period of 24 or 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"560\" data-total-count=\"862\">Since November 2015, Sinclair has ordered its stations to run a daily segment from a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/nation-world\/tracking-terror\">\u201cTerrorism Alert Desk\u201d<\/a>\u00a0with updates on terrorism-related news around the world. During the election campaign last year, it sent out a package that suggested in part that voters should not support Hillary Clinton because the Democratic Party\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/circa.com\/politics\/election-2016\/conservative-pastor-hopes-provocative-video-will-create-more-black-republicans\">was historically pro-slavery<\/a>. Its stations would reach more than 70 percent of the nation\u2019s households, including many of the largest markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"236\" data-total-count=\"1469\">Critics of the deal also cite Sinclair\u2019s willingness to use its stations to advance a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/03\/business\/dealbook\/sinclair-media-expansion-fox-conservative-media.html\">mostly right-leaning agenda<\/a>. That practice has stirred wariness among some of its journalists concerned about intrusive direction from headquarters.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"469\" data-total-count=\"1938\">That is what has happened in Seattle, a progressive city where Sinclair owns the KOMO broadcast station. In interviews over the past several days, eight current and former KOMO employees described a newsroom where some have chafed at Sinclair\u2019s programming directives, especially the must-runs, which they view as too politically tilted and occasionally of poor quality. They all spoke on condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal from the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"163\" data-total-count=\"2629\">Those interviewed said that being on the other side of the country from the corporate headquarters outside Baltimore gave them some breathing room. But not always.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"269\" data-total-count=\"2898\">In late 2013, for instance, after The Seattle Times wrote an editorial criticizing Sinclair\u2019s purchase of KOMO, Sinclair ordered KOMO to do a story critical of the newspaper industry, and of The Seattle Times in particular, according to two of the people interviewed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"501\" data-total-count=\"3399\">KOMO journalists were surprised in January when, at a morning planning meeting, they received what they considered an unusual request. The station\u2019s news director, who normally avoided overtly political stories, instructed his staff to look into an online ad that seemed to be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/online-ads-allegedly-recruiting-protesters-for-trump-ingauration\">recruiting paid protesters<\/a>\u00a0for President Trump\u2019s inauguration. Since its founding in 1953, the station has covered the staples of local news: civic politics, emergencies, transportation and crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"267\" data-total-count=\"4597\">KOMO\u2019s experience under Sinclair could foretell the kinds of challenges the company would face with its news staffs in bigger cities. If it acquires Tribune, Sinclair would gain stations in the nation\u2019s three largest markets \u2014 New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"337\" data-total-count=\"4934\">Not only are cities like those more liberal, but the journalists who work there tend to be more experienced \u2014 and resistant to what they might see as ideologically slanted content. While most viewers never know the corporate ownership of the stations they watch, audiences might notice politically-leaning commentary in the news cycle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsletter-promo\" class=\"newsletter-signup auto-newsletter variant-1-hidden\" data-newsletter-productcode=\"\" data-newsletter-producttitle=\"\" aria-labeledby=\"newsletter-promo-heading\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"275\" data-total-count=\"5209\">But Sinclair also operates dozens of stations in smaller areas like Amarillo, Tex.; Steubenville, Ohio; and Hutchinson, Kan., where audiences are likely to be more conservative. And Sinclair\u2019s expansion comes amid a stark divide in how Americans view the role of the press.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"311\" data-total-count=\"5520\">A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalism.org\/2017\/05\/10\/americans-attitudes-about-the-news-media-deeply-divided-along-partisan-lines\/\">Pew Research Center report this week<\/a>\u00a0showed that about 89 percent of Democrats believe that the news media played a watchdog role in holding political leaders to account; only 42 percent of Republicans said the same. The gap was the widest ever recorded in the Pew survey, which dates back more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"288\" data-total-count=\"5808\">Sinclair acquired KOMO in 2013, making it the largest station in its portfolio (surpassed in 2014 by WJLA in Washington). Still, the mandated segments have become the biggest source of irritation for many KOMO employees. Generally, Sinclair specifies at least one must-run a day. This week there was a package on James B. Comey\u2019s firing as the F.B.I. director and another on \u201cthe world\u2019s biggest threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-8\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"271\" data-total-count=\"6680\">\u201cOur view is that news isn\u2019t liberal or conservative,\u201d said Mr. Twedell, the union representative who is in negotiations with Sinclair management. \u201cNews is just factual or not factual, and we don\u2019t want our reputations tangled up in this kind of controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"331\" data-total-count=\"7011\">Several of the current or former KOMO employees said they disapproved of the on-air commentary of Mark Hyman, a former Sinclair executive who provides conservative arguments that Sinclair pushes out to its stations. And employees bristled at a mandated segment that featured Mr. Livingston, which ran on Sinclair stations in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"152\" data-total-count=\"7163\">\u201cIf you believe this station\u2019s coverage is unfair, please reach out to my office directly,\u201d he said in the must-run. \u201cWe value your comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"208\" data-total-count=\"7371\">The staff members thought the segment reinforced their frustration with Sinclair, saying it undercut their professionalism. They also suggested that the company did not understand KOMO\u2019s progressive market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"181\" data-total-count=\"7552\">Mr. Livingston said in the interview on Thursday that he thought it was important to run the segment to ensure viewers understood the company\u2019s commitment \u201cto tell the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">There are some benefits in having a large corporate owner. Mr. Livingston said Sinclair invested millions of dollars in KOMO, replacing old equipment and providing new station trucks.
