First, the party is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/02\/02\/upshot\/polls-midterm-election-republicans-democrats.html\">performing better than Republicans<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/congress-generic-ballot-polls\/\">generic ballot polls<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 surveys in which people are asked which party they would support in a congressional election. Second, President Trump\u2019s approval rating is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/trump-approval-ratings\/\">relatively low<\/a>. Most of these races are in districts where Hillary Clinton and Mr. Trump barely outperformed the other in the 2016 presidential race, and many of the incumbents won with smaller margins as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"g-item g-text \">\n<p class=\"g-body\">Even some Republicans seats in Trump country are in jeopardy. Six are leaning toward Democrats, including Martha McSally\u2019s open seat in Arizona\u2019s Second District. Two, however, are likely to remain Republican, including New York\u2019s 24th District, where John Katko won 60 percent of the vote in 2016 and is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/25\/nyregion\/stephanie-miner-campaign-governor-cuomo.html\">unlikely to face a strong Democratic challenger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"g-item g-text \">\n<p class=\"g-body\">Fund-raising plays a major part in elections, and several Republican incumbents are being outraised by Democratic challengers.
