The statistics provided are from 2001 &#8211; 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"article__meta\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/launch.newsinc.com\/?type=VideoPlayer\/Single&amp;widgetId=1&amp;trackingGroup=69016&amp;playlistId=19132&amp;siteSection=site_section_id&amp;videoId=32835180\" width=\"590\" height=\"332\" frameborder=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\\<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump calls out the KKK, neo-Nazis and other hate groups in condemning violence in Charlottesville, Va. on Aug. 12, 2017.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article__text\">\n<p>A deadly attack in Charlottesville, Va., during a white nationalist rally and counterprotests brought attention to far-right terrorism and how it compares with radical Islamic terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump, always quick to denounce radical Islamic terrorist attacks, was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/first-read\/trump-s-charlottesville-response-was-failure-presidential-leadership-n792356\">widely<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/truth-o-meter\/article\/2017\/aug\/14\/context-president-donald-trumps-saturday-statement\/\">criticized<\/a>\u00a0for taking longer to explicitly condemn white nationalists.<\/p>\n<p>After first criticizing actions on &#8220;many sides,&#8221; Trump finally gave a full-throated condemnation two days later. The day after that, he said he thought &#8220;there is blame on both sides.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the Aug. 12 protests, the driver of a Dodge Challenger drove into a crowd of people. Heather D. Heyer, 32, was killed and at least 19 others were injured, said a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CvilleCityHall\/status\/896750298156470273\">statement<\/a>\u00a0from the city government. Authorities charged a 20-year-old man from Ohio,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/13\/us\/james-alex-fields-charlottesville-driver-.html\">James A. Fields Jr.<\/a>, with second-degree murder.<\/p>\n<p>The attack met the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/2331\">legal definition<\/a>\u00a0of domestic terrorism,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trumps-attorney-general-evil-charlottesville-car-ramming-fits\/story?id=49202191\">said<\/a>\u00a0Attorney General Jeff Sessions in an interview with ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>After the Charlottesville events, we wondered about the latest numbers on domestic terrorism. How many attacks have there been, and who caused them?<\/p>\n<p>A recent government report shows that from Sept. 12, 2001, to Dec. 31, 2016, there were 85 deadly attacks in the United States by violent extremists.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the attacks\u00a0were carried out by far-right violent extremists. But more people died during attacks connected with Islamic jihadist extremists.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pf_subheadline\">What a government report says about \u2018violent extremism\u2019<\/div>\n<p>Violent extremism is generally defined as supporting or committing violent acts to achieve political, ideological, religious or social goals, said an April 2017\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/690\/683984.pdf\">report<\/a>\u00a0from the U.S. Government Accountability Office.<\/p>\n<p>Perpetrators of violent extremism\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/cve508\/teen-website\/what-are-known-violent-extremist-groups\">include<\/a>\u00a0white supremacists; anti-government groups; groups with extreme views on abortion, animal rights, the environment or federal ownership of public lands; and radical Islamist entities, such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).<\/p>\n<p>The 9\/11 terrorist attacks resulted in the largest number of deaths in the United States caused by violent extremism, the GAO report said. About 3,000 people were killed in the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Since then \u2014 from Sept. 12, 2001, to Dec. 31, 2016 \u00a0\u2014 there have been 85 attacks in the country by violent extremists resulting in 225 deaths. GAO reported citing data from the U.S. Extremist Crime Database.<\/p>\n<p>Of those 225 deaths:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 106 individuals were killed by far-right violent extremists in 62 separate incidents;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 119 individuals were killed by radical Islamist violent extremists in 23 separate incidents;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The number of people killed in a given year ranged from one to 49.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artembed\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.politifact.com.s3.amazonaws.com\/politifact\/photos\/ExtremistGraph2.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<p>GAO noted that 41 percent of the deaths caused by a radical Islamist during the reviewed period happened in one incident: the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting. In June 2016, Omar Mateen, born in the United States to Afghan parents, killed 49 people at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artembed\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.politifact.com.s3.amazonaws.com\/politifact\/photos\/ExtremistGraph1.jpg\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"pf_subheadline\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pf_subheadline\">Other research\u00a0on home-grown terrorism<\/div>\n<p>The think tank New America has compiled information on terrorist activities in the United States after 9\/11.
