The authors found no corresponding link between assaults and rallies for Mr. Trump\u2019s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"196\" data-total-count=\"747\">\u201cIt appeared to be a phenomenon that\u2019s unique to Donald Trump\u2019s rally,\u201d said Christopher Morrison, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and the lead author of the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"198\" data-total-count=\"945\">It may come as little surprise that the rallies were associated with increased violence, as the often volcanic clashes between Mr. Trump\u2019s supporters and opponents were widely covered at the time.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"nyt_video_player\" title=\"New York Times Video - Embed Player\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/video\/players\/offsite\/index.html?videoId=100000004533191\" width=\"480\" height=\"321\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">In March 2016 alone, a Trump rally in Chicago was called off\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/12\/us\/trump-rally-in-chicago-canceled-after-violent-scuffles.html\">after violent clashes<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0broke out, while\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/03\/11\/us\/politics\/riskiest-political-act-of-2016-protesting-at-rallies-for-donald-trump.html\">an anti-Trump protester was punched<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0at a rally in North Carolina and another was\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/politics\/first-draft\/2016\/03\/19\/protester-punched-and-kicked-while-being-led-from-donald-trump-rally-in-tucson\/\">punched and kicked<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0at a rally in Arizona. The following month, several\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/30\/us\/politics\/protest-trump-california.html\">Trump supporters were assaulted<\/a><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">\u00a0at a California rally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"78\" data-total-count=\"1329\">Mr. Trump himself repeatedly seemed to endorse attacks on his detractors, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"1635\">\u201cMaybe he should have been roughed up,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/politics\/first-draft\/2015\/11\/22\/donald-trump-says-he-supports-those-who-roughed-up-protester-at-his-event\/\">he said of one protester<\/a>\u00a0who was reportedly punched and kicked in November 2015. \u201cI\u2019d like to punch him in the face, I\u2019ll tell ya,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/politics\/first-draft\/2016\/02\/23\/donald-trump-on-protester-id-like-to-punch-him-in-the-face\/\">he said of another<\/a>\u00a0a few months later. He even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/politics\/first-draft\/2016\/03\/13\/donald-trump-says-he-may-pay-legal-fees-of-accused-attacker\/\">offered to pay legal fees<\/a>\u00a0for his supporters if they became too aggressive.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"105\" data-total-count=\"1740\">The supporters also often aimed offensive and violent rhetoric at Mrs. Clinton, suggesting she be killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"222\" data-total-count=\"1962\">To determine whether those words and news reports corresponded with an actual shift in violence, the researchers compiled a list of 31 Trump rallies and 38 Clinton rallies held in cities with assault data available online.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">They compared the number of assaults reported on the day of the rally to the number reported on the corresponding day of the week, for each of the four weeks before and after the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"124\" data-total-count=\"2271\">On a typical day, cities saw an average of 19.4 assaults, they found. On the day of a Trump rally, that number rose to 21.7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"154\" data-total-count=\"2425\">The pattern held even when the researchers controlled for the influence of factors like population size, data sources and the day used for the comparison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"300\" data-total-count=\"2725\">The researchers offered two explanations for the increase in assaults. Either they were the result of clashes at or near the rallies, or they occurred elsewhere in the cities after the aggressive mood on display by Mr. Trump, his supporters or his opponents had spread through \u201csocial contagion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"240\" data-total-count=\"2965\">There were some limitations to the findings, the authors noted.
