Casey Cagle (David Goldman\/Associated Press)<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"text\">Days after Delta Air Lines\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2018\/02\/24\/united-and-delta-cut-ties-to-nra-as-boycott-movement-spreads-to-global-corporations\/\">announced it\u00a0would stop offering discounted fares to National Rifle Association members<\/a>, a top Georgia Republican retaliated\u00a0by vowing to kill state legislation that would hand the airline a\u00a0lucrative tax break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who leads the Georgia State Senate, demanded Monday that Atlanta-based Delta, one of the state\u2019s largest employers, make a choice: Reverse its NRA decision, or watch Republican lawmakers strike down a $50 million sales tax exemption on jet fuel, of which Delta would be the primary beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cI will kill any tax legislation that benefits @Delta unless the company changes its position and fully reinstates its relationship with @NRA,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaseyCagle\/status\/968199605803454465\">Cagle tweeted<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cCorporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Cagle, who has served as Georgia\u2019s lieutenant governor since 2007, could weave the issue into his campaign in Georgia\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.myajc.com\/news\/state--regional-govt--politics\/cagle-the-georgia-capitol-crowd-man-for-governor\/e4lRy9WDUwCh399kuzXcAL\/\">upcoming gubernatorial<\/a>race, in which he is considered the leading GOP contender to replace Gov. Nathan Deal (R).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Delta has not commented on the threat from Cagle, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaseyCagle\/status\/967560442305548289\">says<\/a>\u00a0he is\u00a0\u201ca lifelong member of the NRA\u201d and\u00a0boasts\u00a0that he has earned an A+ rating from the\u00a0organization every year he has served in elected office. The\u00a0gun-rights group has also endorsed Cagle in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Delta recently joined\u00a0United Airlines, Best Western, MetLife and at least a dozen other\u00a0 companies\u00a0in\u00a0cutting discounts and perks for NRA members amid\u00a0the national gun-control debate\u00a0after the deadly Valentine\u2019s Day shooting at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2018\/02\/15\/florida-school-shooting-suspect-booked-on-17-counts-of-murder-premeditated\/?hpid=hp_rhp-banner-main_flashootingthurs-745am%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&amp;utm_term=.3a93ee8a37de\">Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School<\/a>\u00a0in Parkland, Fla.\u00a0Advocates of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2018\/02\/24\/united-and-delta-cut-ties-to-nra-as-boycott-movement-spreads-to-global-corporations\/?utm_term=.9d4b6167c716\">#BoycottNRA movement<\/a>\u00a0are now determined to convince tech giants such as Apple, Google, Roku and Amazon to stop streaming NRA-produced videos, though none have announced plans to do so.\u00a0(Amazon\u2019s founder, Jeffrey P. (The Washington Post)<\/figure>\n<p class=\"text\">The NRA has lashed out at the boycott movement, saying that the companies\u00a0that dropped the discounts were participating in \u201ca shameful display of political and civic cowardice.\u201d But the group also downplayed the importance of the\u00a0company actions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cLet it be absolutely clear,\u201d a weekend statement from the NRA said. \u201cThe loss of a discount will neither scare nor distract one single NRA member from our mission to stand and defend the individual freedoms that have always made America the greatest nation in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Political leaders in some blue states have begun competing for Delta\u2019s favor by encouraging the airline to relocate its hub from Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cHey @delta \u2014 Virginia is for lovers and airline hubs. You\u2019re welcome here any time,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorVA\/status\/968510566267531266\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">New York Lt. Gov.\u00a0Kathy Hochul noted that New York \u201cis open for business\u201d and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LtGovHochulNY\/status\/968220657380134913?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\">suggested<\/a>\u00a0that the airline should move its headquarters to \u201cwhere you\u2019re appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">The lieutenant governor of Washington, Cyrus Habib, thanked Delta for cutting ties with the NRA and said his state would be a lovely place to do business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">The embrace of Delta by leading Democrats was similar to how Republican leaders around the country embraced the NRA after a prominent Dallas politician said he didn\u2019t want the group holding its annual convention there in May. Delta continues to support the 2nd\u00a0Amendment,\u201d the airline\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.delta.com\/update-delta-ends-nra-discount-annual-meeting\">said in a statement<\/a>\u00a0Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Cagle soon issued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaseyCagle\/status\/967560442305548289\">a statement of his own<\/a>, saying that \u201cdiscriminating against law-abiding gun owners will not solve the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">The\u00a0statement didn\u2019t mention Delta specifically\u00a0but\u00a0called on \u201ccorporate America\u201d to \u201cdonate a portion of its profits to mental health treatments and school safety initiatives. They should put their money where their mouth is instead of engaging in viewpoint discrimination against conservatives and law-abiding gun owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">But on Monday, Cagle set his sights on Delta, which\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.delta.com\/atlanta-fact-sheet\">says it\u2019s Georgia\u2019s No. 1 private employer<\/a>, with 33,000 employees across the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Many conservatives cheered Cagle\u2019s threat. But Walter Shaub, the former director of the federal Office of Government Ethics, slammed the Georgia lawmaker on Twitter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/waltshaub\/status\/968337051962798080\">writing<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cSo you\u2019ve decided you represent an association headquartered just outside Washington DC instead of the people of Georgia, including those who work for Delta? At least you\u2019re honest about the fact that you don\u2019t care about your job or your people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">It\u2019s unusual for the Georgia\u2019s Republican leaders\u00a0to oppose tax breaks for a major corporation \u2014 especially when that tax break could provide an economic boost, said Chuck Bullock, a political science professor at the University of Georgia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cThere was some debate over the tax break,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the justification was that it would bring more jobs to the state. That\u2019s what you usually hear from Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Bullock said Cagle\u2019s remarks may have been made with the upcoming gubernatorial primary in mind, as his bold show of commitment to the\u00a0Second Amendment\u00a0will likely play well with core Republican voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">But he also said it\u2019s likely that Republican state leaders\u2019 threats aren\u2019t empty ones. He wouldn\u2019t be surprised if the bill, which was easily approved in the House on Thursday, fails in the Senate, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">\u201cIt\u2019s not like [Delta] can pack up and move somewhere else. This is their major hub,\u201d he said. \u201cBut what might be a bigger concern is that other corporations view this negatively. Ones that aren\u2019t already anchored in Atlanta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Other Georgia Republicans have joined Cagle. State Sen. Rick Jaffares\u00a0(R) promised to lead the charge to kill the bill \u201cto let Delta know their attack on the NRA and our 2nd Amendment is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gopplaybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-02_22-50-08.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"385\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.gopplaybook.com\/?attachment_id=385\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gopplaybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-02_22-50-08.jpg?fit=532%2C538&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"532,538\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"2018-03-02_22-50-08\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gopplaybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-02_22-50-08.jpg?fit=532%2C538&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-385 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gopplaybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-02_22-50-08.jpg?resize=532%2C538&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"532\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gopplaybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-02_22-50-08.jpg?w=532&amp;ssl=1 532w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gopplaybook.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2018-03-02_22-50-08.jpg?resize=297%2C300&amp;ssl=1 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Another conservative state senator,\u00a0Michael Williams,\u00a0said\u00a0the \u201cvast majority\u201d of Republicans in the Senate want to reject the proposed tax break.\u00a0\u201cWhen Delta came out and pretty much dumped on all the NRA members, it invigorated a lot of our base,\u201d Williams said,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/georgia-gop-leader-threatens-delta-over-cutting-its-nra-ties\/2018\/02\/26\/880ccdb0-1b56-11e8-98f5-ceecfa8741b6_story.html?utm_term=.e13487c0a937\">according to the Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re going to fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">Until Delta\u2019s announcement, the bill seemed to have wide support, as advocates say it would\u00a0attract flights to Atlanta as opposed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/politics.myajc.com\/blog\/politics\/delta-nra-move-could-put-airline-tax-break-georgia-risk\/zO5KoRXb6MdZYWNAZGttRK\/\">other major airports<\/a>, where jet fuel taxes are not charged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text\">During an earnings call last month, Delta officials said the federal Tax\u00a0Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 allowed the company to take a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.delta.com\/delta-air-lines-announces-december-quarter-and-full-year-2017-profit\">one-time charge of\u00a0$150 million<\/a>\u00a0in the fourth quarter because of the new inclusion of foreign earnings and the reevaluation of deferred tax assets.
