He campaigned on states\u2019 rights, trimming the state budget and repealing the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"281\" data-total-count=\"689\">Mr. Goodman, who is married, promoted \u201cthe ideals of a loving father and mother\u201d and \u201ca committed natural marriage\u201d on his campaign website, which has since been taken down. He worked for Jim Jordan, a congressman from Ohio known for his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jordan.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=397935\">staunch opposition to gay marriage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"239\" data-total-count=\"928\">A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/metro\/index.ssf\/2017\/11\/ohio_rep_wes_goodman_resigns_o.html\">series<\/a>\u00a0of reports\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/news\/20171115\/inappropriate-behavior-with-man-in-his-office-led-to-ohio-lawmakers-ouster\">alleged<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/metro\/index.ssf\/2017\/11\/ohio_legislator_wes_goodman_le.html\">for years<\/a>\u00a0Mr. Goodman had sought, or engaged in, consensual sexual encounters with men.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/how-a-conservative-group-dealt-with-a-fondling-charge-against-a-rising-gop-star\/2017\/11\/17\/b3b4b8da-c956-11e7-b0cf-7689a9f2d84e_story.html?utm_term=.4ab93aa85d8a\">The Washington Post<\/a>also reported on an allegation that Mr. Goodman had groped an 18-year-old college student in 2015.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"189\" data-total-count=\"1117\">Clifford A. Rosenberger, the speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, said in a statement that he learned about \u201cinappropriate behavior\u201d by Mr. Goodman on Tuesday and met with him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"111\" data-total-count=\"1228\">Mr. Goodman \u201cacknowledged and confirmed the allegations,\u201d which led to his resignation, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"314\" data-total-count=\"1542\">Brad Miller, a spokesman for Mr. Rosenberger, said on Sunday that Mr. Goodman several months ago had an \u201cinappropriate interaction\u201d with someone at his office in Columbus, Ohio. He said the interaction was consensual, and there had been no complaints of harassment by Mr. Goodman while he was a representative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"362\" data-total-count=\"1904\">\u201cWe all bring our own struggles and our own trials into public life,\u201d Mr. Goodman said in a statement on Wednesday. \u201cThat has been true for me, and I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents and our state in a way that reflects the best ideals of public service. That\u2019s their right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"88\" data-total-count=\"2402\">But he said the allegation about an unwanted sexual advance had \u201ctipped the scales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"416\" data-total-count=\"2818\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/how-a-conservative-group-dealt-with-a-fondling-charge-against-a-rising-gop-star\/2017\/11\/17\/b3b4b8da-c956-11e7-b0cf-7689a9f2d84e_story.html?utm_term=.50f99a2fc135\">The Post<\/a>, citing letters and emails, reported that conservative leaders knew that Mr. Goodman was accused of touching an 18-year-old in 2015. One of those leaders, Tony Perkins, is the president of the Family Research Council, an advocacy group that says \u201chomosexual conduct\u201d is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.frc.org\/homosexuality\">by definition unnatural<\/a>.\u201d He urged Mr. Goodman not to run for office but did not make the allegations public, The Post reported.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsletter-promo\" class=\"newsletter-signup variant-1-hidden \" data-newsletter-productcode=\"GN\" data-newsletter-producttitle=\"GN\" aria-labeledby=\"newsletter-promo-heading\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"#continues-post-newsletter\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"105\" data-total-count=\"2923\">Mr. Perkins and media representatives of the council did not respond to emails and phone calls on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"80\" data-total-count=\"3003\">More men have recently come forward with stories of encounters with Mr. Goodman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"313\" data-total-count=\"3316\">Johnny Hadlock, 33, said in a phone interview on Saturday that Mr. Goodman was working for Mr. Jordan when they met sometime in late 2010 or early 2011. They became friends and would exchange text messages. Mr. Hadlock said some of the texts were \u201csexual\u201d and \u201csalacious\u201d and that they once had phone sex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"73\" data-total-count=\"3389\">Mr. Hadlock said they continued to exchange Facebook messages until 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"164\" data-total-count=\"3553\">Another man, Chris Donnelly, 32, said in a phone interview on Saturday that Mr. Goodman responded to an online ad seeking a sexual encounter that he posted in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"329\" data-total-count=\"3882\">He said Mr. Goodman asked him to keep their meeting secret. But after Mr. Goodman won the Ohio Republican primary in 2016, Mr. Donnelly said he described the encounter to a Republican political operative who promised that officials would speak to Mr. Goodman. It was not clear to Mr. Donnelly what, if any, action had been taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"104\" data-total-count=\"3986\">\u201cIt annoyed me that they didn\u2019t think there was anything wrong with the hypocrisy of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"477\" data-total-count=\"4463\">Mr. Goodman, who did not respond to phone calls seeking comment on Saturday and Sunday, is one of several politicians facing accusations of sexual misconduct, harassment or abuse. That list includes Senator Al Franken, a Democrat of Minnesota, who was accused of groping and forcibly kissing a woman in 2006; and the former Alabama state judge Roy Moore, a Republican who is running for a Senate seat and faces allegations of having pursued and harassed several underage girls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"197\" data-total-count=\"4660\">Mr. Zawistowski said that while Mr. Goodman was right to resign given the allegation about an unwanted sexual advance, the rush of accusations in recent weeks felt like a \u201cSpanish Inquisition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"204\" data-total-count=\"4864\">\u201cIt\u2019s all so polarizing, and I think both sides are guilty of it,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re throwing these bombs \u2014 who\u2019s the most immoral?
