The move will delay immediate action on redistricting in the state, a victory for GOP officials in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The high court, in a split 5-4 vote along ideological lines in September, had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/under-the-radar\/2017\/09\/12\/supreme-court-blocks-ruling-against-texas-redistricting-242644\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>blocked a lower-court ruling<\/u><\/a>\u00a0that the state\u2019s maps, adopted in 2013, were partially a product of intentional racial discrimination. The lower ruling would have required state officials to redraw the maps or face the prospect of having the Supreme Court settle the matter.<\/p>\n<p>The case becomes the third gerrymandering dispute on the docket, with the justices picking up cases on political redistricting in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/supreme-court-takes-up-wisconsin-as-first-test-in-partisan-gerrymandering-claims\/2017\/10\/03\/4349b5de-a82a-11e7-b3aa-c0e2e1d41e38_story.html?utm_term=.30b552bae05e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<u>Wisconsin in October<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/courts_law\/2017\/12\/08\/4fde65f4-dc66-11e7-b1a8-62589434a581_story.html?utm_term=.1aed296b92ce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<u>Maryland in December<\/u><\/a>. The case in Texas is the first to thrust racial discrimination in state maps \u2014 and its impact on voters of color \u2014 onto the high court\u2019s schedule this term.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court also faces the prospect of making decisions on two additional redistricting cases, in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, where legal battles over state maps are brewing.<\/p>\n<p>Federal judges in Pennsylvania, in a 2-1 vote on Wednesday, upheld a ruling that the state\u2019s congressional district map is constitutional. Attorneys for the plaintiffs, however, have indicated they plan to appeal to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>In North Carolina earlier this week, a panel<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/09\/north-carolina-congress-gerrymander-274624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0of federal judges\u00a0<u>tossed out<\/u><\/a>\u00a0the state\u2019s congressional map, citing unconstitutional partisan gerrymandering, a move that gave officials just two weeks to adopt a new map.
