The leader of a conservative think tank orchestrating plans for a massive overhaul of the federal government<\/a> in the event of a Republican presidential win said that the country is in the midst of a \u201csecond American Revolution\u201d that will be bloodless \u201cif the left allows it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts made the comments Tuesday on Steve Bannon\u2019s \u201cWar Room\u201d podcast, adding that Republicans are \u201cin the process of taking this country back.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Democrats are \u201capoplectic right now\u201d because the right is winning, Roberts told Dave Brat, a former congressman from Virginia who is the podcast\u2019s guest host as Bannon serves a four-month prison term for defying a congressional subpoena in the investigation into the U.S. Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd so I come full circle on this response and just want to encourage you with some substance that we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be,\u201d Roberts said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks shed light on what a group that promises to have significant influence over a possible second term for former President Trump is thinking about this moment in American politics. The Heritage Foundation is spearheading Project 2025, a sweeping road map for a new GOP administration that includes plans for dismantling aspects of the federal government and ousting thousands of civil servants in favor of Trump loyalists who will carry out a hard-right agenda without complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His call for revolution and vague reference to violence also unnerved some Democrats who interpreted it as threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is chilling,\u201d former Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson wrote on the social media platform X. \u201cTheir idea of a second American Revolution is to undo the first one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Singer, a spokesperson for President Biden\u2019s reelection campaign, pointed to this week\u2019s Fourth of July holiday in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c248 years ago tomorrow America declared independence from a tyrannical king, and now Donald Trump and his allies want to make him one at our expense,\u201d Singer said, adding that Trump and his allies are \u201ddreaming of a violent revolution to destroy the very idea of America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roberts, whose name Bannon recently floated to the New York Times as a potential chief of staff option for Trump, also said on the podcast that Republicans should be encouraged by the Supreme Court\u2019s recent immunity ruling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Monday\u2019s decision \u2014 which gives presidents broad immunity from prosecution \u2014 is \u201cvital\u201d to ensure a president won\u2019t have to \u201csecond-guess, triple-guess every decision they\u2019re making in their official capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, said Roberts\u2019 comments about a \u201csecond American Revolution\u201d are \u201ca bit terrifying but also elucidating.\u201d The 1,000-page Project 2025 playbook calls for far-reaching changes in government, including rolling back protections for the LGBTQ+ community and infusing Christianity more deeply into society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRoberts, the Heritage Foundation, and its allies in Project 2025 want to reorder American society and fundamentally change it,\u201d Beirich said. \u201cHe\u2019s said the quiet part out loud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
