Pro-Trump\npersonality Candace Owens<\/a> described Adolf Hitler\u2019s plan for\nGermany as initially \u201cOK\u201d while speaking in the same city that the Nazi\ndictator relentlessly bombed nearly 80 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nremarks came in newly resurfaced video, taken in December at a London event launching\nthe British chapter of Turning Point USA, the conservative campus group she\nhelps lead. Owens\u2019s comments were first reported on Friday by BuzzFeed News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owens\nwas asked by an audience member for her thoughts on the future of nationalist\nmovements. In her response, Owens said \u201cnationalism\u201d has been given a bad rap\nbefore pivoting to the Nazi dictator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen\nwe say nationalism, the first thing people think about, at least in America, is\nHitler. He was a national socialist.\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf\nHitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine,\u201d\nOwens continued, while standing next to Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\nproblem is he wanted, he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize,\nhe wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German, everybody to\nlook a different way. To me, that\u2019s not nationalism. So in thinking about how\nit could go bad down the line, I don\u2019t really have an issue with nationalism, I\nreally don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning\nPoint USA declined to comment on Owens\u2019s remarks and referred The Daily Beast\nto Owens herself, who serves as the organization\u2019s communications director. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked\nby The Daily Beast to explain her remarks, Owens called Hitler a \u201chomicidal\nmaniacal globalist\u201d and claimed her response was simply \u201cabout why Americans\nWRONGLY equate the word \u2018nationalism\u2019 to Hitler.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy\nfinal comment is that Hitler was the scum of the earth,\u201d Owens wrote in an\nemail. \u201cAs is the publication you write for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owens\nalso stood by her remarks in a Periscope livestream<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TPUSA\nhas been dogged by racism controversies, even as its success on college\ncampuses and with conservative donors have made both Owens and Kirk stars on\nthe right. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last\nOctober, members of a Turning Point chapter in Florida were revealed<\/a> to be sharing racist memes in a\ngroup chat. In 2017, the New Yorker<\/em> reported<\/a> that a high-ranking TPUSA member once\nwrote \u201cI hate blacks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owens\nhas frequently clashed with other conservative personalities, including Fox\nNews\u2019 Tomi Lahren. Rapper Kanye West, whose endorsement rocketed Owens to fame,\neventually distanced himself<\/a> from her in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite\nher politics, Owens has repeatedly insisted that she isn\u2019t \u201cfar-right.\u201d After\nTwitter described her as such in 2018, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey publicly apologized<\/a> to Owens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
