And by the way, Peter, that\u2019s a lot\n of money pouring into our Treasury, you know. We never made 5 cents \nwith China. We\u2019re getting right now 25 percent on $50 billion.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2dbbbd\">False. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tariffs imposed on imports of foreign goods <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/29\/us\/politics\/how-tariffs-work-china.html?module=inline\">do not mean another country is paying the bill. <\/a>The costs are largely passed onto American companies and consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\n is also not true that the Treasury Department had never collected any \nrevenue from tariffs on Chinese products before President Trump. \nPresident George Washington signed the Tariff Act of 1789, <a href=\"http:\/\/americanhistory.si.edu\/american-enterprise-exhibition\/merchant-era\/china-trade\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">when trade between China and the United States was already established.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tariffs generated <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/how-has-federal-revenue-changed-over-time\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">almost a third of all federal revenue in 1915<\/a>. In the 2016 fiscal year, the Treasury Department collected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiscal.treasury.gov\/files\/reports-statements\/financial-report\/01112017FR-(Final).pdf#page=125\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$35 billion in tariff revenue<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cVeterans Choice, V.A. Choice. They\u2019ve been trying \u2014 as long as you\u2019ve been writing, they\u2019ve been trying to get V.A. Choice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2af1d1f5\">This is misleading. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Trump is confusing an existing program for veterans\u2019 health care with recently enacted overhauls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Veterans Choice Program was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/113th-congress\/house-bill\/3230\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">created in 2014<\/a> after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/29\/us\/va-report-confirms-improper-waiting-lists-at-phoenix-center.html?module=inline\">the scandal of hidden waiting lists<\/a>\n at Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals. Under the program, \nveterans who do not live within 40 miles of a department hospital or \nface wait times of more than 30 days for care could seek private health \ncare funded by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June, Mr. Trump signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/05\/23\/us\/politics\/veterans-health-care.html?module=inline\">a law that overhauled and consolidated<\/a> Veterans Choice and other existing programs into a single Veterans Community Care Program. Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/30\/us\/politics\/veterans-health-care.html?module=inline\">new rules<\/a>\n unveiled this week by the administration, veterans who must drive for \nat least 30 minutes to one of the department\u2019s facilities will be able \nto opt for private care, a less stringent requirement for many veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf\n the Obamacare were repealed and replaced \u2014 except for John McCain, it \nwould have been, you know, he campaigned against it for six years, and \nthen when he had the chance, he went thumbs down at 2 o\u2019clock in the \nmorning.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-730b8571\">This is exaggerated. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s\n a stretch to say that the Affordable Care Act would have been repealed \nand replaced were it not for Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona,\n w<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/08\/25\/obituaries\/john-mccain-dead.html?module=inline\">ho died in August<\/a>. An affirmative vote from the senator would have kicked off a process, but a full repeal would not have been assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senate voted on \u2014 and rejected \u2014 three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/07\/25\/us\/politics\/senate-votes-repeal-obamacare.html?module=inline\">proposals<\/a>\n to repeal the health care law. Mr. McCain, along with Senators Susan \nCollins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, both also Republican, \nvoted with Democrats against one version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if Mr. McCain or either of his colleagues had voted with their party, that version of the bill \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/07\/25\/us\/which-health-bill-will-the-senate-vote-on.html?module=inline\">known as \u201cskinny repeal\u201d<\/a>  \u2014 would have repealed the individual and employer mandates, but would  have left Medicaid expansion and the health care law\u2019s insurance  regulations intact (though leaving millions more Americans uninsured).  And it would still have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/27\/us\/politics\/obamacare-partial-repeal-senate-republicans-revolt.html?module=inline\">required passage in the House<\/a> or lawmakers from both chambers to negotiate their differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cYou\n look at the heroin and a lot of the other drugs, they come from \u2014 90 \npercent, more than 90 percent \u2014 from right across the southern border. \nAnd unlike what the Democrats say, they don\u2019t, you don\u2019t bring trucks of\n drugs through the checkpoints. You bring trucks of drugs by making a \nright 20 miles, and a left into the country.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2dbbbd\">False. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr.\n Trump is right that the majority of heroin comes in through southern \nborder, but contrary to his assertions, most of it comes through ports \nof entry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-11\/DIR-032-18%202018%20NDTA%20final%20low%20resolution.pdf#page=31\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2019\/01\/11\/us\/politics\/trump-border-crisis-reality.html?module=inline\">About 90 percent of heroin was seized at ports of entry<\/a> from Oct. 1, 2017, to Aug. 30, 2018, compared with about 10 percent in the areas between ports of entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cBut\n look, we have among the highest polls \u2014 and actually the highest polls \u2014\n but among the highest polls ever in the history of the Republican \nParty.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2dbbbd\">False.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Trump had an 88 percent approval rating among Republicans at Day 737 of his presidency, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/interactives\/185273\/presidential-job-approval-center.aspx\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Gallup<\/a>,\n compared with 93 percent for President George W. Bush, 95 percent for \nPresident George Bush and 92 percent for President Dwight D. Eisenhower \nat roughly the same point in their presidencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cYou\n know, we\u2019ve created over 500,000 manufacturing jobs, and the previous \nadministration lost 200,000 over eight years and said that was the magic\n wand.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2af1d1f5\">This is misleading.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The numbers omit important context. President Barack Obama presided over a net loss of 192,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/data.bls.gov\/timeseries\/CES3000000001?amp%253bdata_tool=XGtable&amp;output_view=data&amp;include_graphs=true\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">manufacturing jobs<\/a>\n from January 2009 to January 2017. Under Mr. Trump, the economy has \nadded 473,000 manufacturing jobs so far. But when he took office, Mr. \nObama inherited a deep, job-killing recession, while Mr. Trump was sworn\n in during an economic recovery that began under his predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI got him more money than the military has ever seen before.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2dbbbd\">False. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2019,\n which Mr. Trump signed in August, provided $716 billion for the \nPentagon\u2019s basic operations and war spending, as well as for the Energy \nDepartment\u2019s national security programs. But that\u2019s not the largest \nmilitary budget in recent history, let alone all of American history. \nEven if inflation were not taken into account, Mr. Obama signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armed-services.senate.gov\/press-releases\/senate-passes-ike-skelton-national-defense-authorization-act-for-fiscal-year-2011\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$726 billion National Defense Authorization Act<\/a> for the 2011 fiscal year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjusted for inflation, Congress authorized more money for the Pentagon <a href=\"https:\/\/comptroller.defense.gov\/Portals\/45\/Documents\/defbudget\/fy2019\/FY19_Green_Book.pdf#page=161\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">every fiscal year from 2007 to 2012<\/a>, during the peak of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cYou\n know it\u2019s interesting, historically, you just never \u2014 you rarely put a \nmilitary person in, which surprises me. When I first got here, I said, \n\u2018What do you mean?\u2019 That\u2019s the natural of all naturals. Actually, you \nneed special approvals to put them in, you know, etc. etc. Normally, a \nbusiness person goes in \u2014 and I mean, you have one exception or two \nexceptions \u2014 but historically, a business person goes in to the \nsecretary of defense.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2dbbbd\">False. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The opposite is true. Most secretaries of defense have had previous military experience. Of the <a href=\"https:\/\/history.defense.gov\/DOD-History\/Secretaries-of-Defense\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">26 men to have held the position<\/a> since 1947, when the position was created, 19 have served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other seven were businessmen: <a href=\"https:\/\/history.defense.gov\/Multimedia\/Biographies\/Article-View\/Article\/571268\/charles-e-wilson\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charles E. Wilson<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/history.defense.gov\/Multimedia\/Biographies\/Article-View\/Article\/571269\/neil-h-mcelroy\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Neil H. McElroy<\/a> under Mr. Eisenhower; <a href=\"https:\/\/history.defense.gov\/Multimedia\/Biographies\/Article-View\/Article\/571289\/james-r-schlesinger\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James R. Schlesinger<\/a>,\n the former director of the C.I.A., under President Richard M. Nixon; \nHarold Brown, a scientist and former secretary of the Air Force, under \nPresident Jimmy Carter; <a href=\"https:\/\/history.defense.gov\/Multimedia\/Biographies\/Article-View\/Article\/571284\/richard-b-cheney\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dick Cheney<\/a>, the future vice president, under President George Bush; <a href=\"https:\/\/history.defense.gov\/Multimedia\/Biographies\/Article-View\/Article\/571281\/william-s-cohen\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">William S. Cohen<\/a>, a former senator, under President Bill Clinton; and <a href=\"https:\/\/history.defense.gov\/Multimedia\/Biographies\/Article-View\/Article\/571296\/ashton-b-carter\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ashton B. Carter<\/a>, a scientist and former deputy defense secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI mean, the primary collusion was Hillary Clinton.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-2dbbbd\">False. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This refers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/clinton-campaign-dnc-paid-for-research-that-led-to-russia-dossier\/2017\/10\/24\/226fabf0-b8e4-11e7-a908-a3470754bbb9_story.html?utm_term=.bc03c605c785\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">news reports<\/a>\n that the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 \npresidential campaign paid for opposition research that led to a dossier\n about Mr. Trump compiled by Christopher Steele, a former British spy. \nBut it was a conservative website, The Washington Free Beacon, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/27\/us\/politics\/trump-dossier-paul-singer.html?module=inline\">first paid a research firm<\/a>\n for the research. It stopped when Mr. Trump won the nomination. The \nfirm, Fusion GPS, was then paid by the Democrats for the research that \nbecame the dossier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collusion, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/11\/us\/politics\/collusion-trump-russia-campaign.html?module=inline\">generally understood as secretive and often illicit collaboration<\/a>,\n has no defined legal meaning. Mr. Steele did use Russian sources to \ncompile his dossier, and reported his findings to the F.B.I. But there \nis no evidence anyone from the Clinton campaign met with Russian \nofficials and conspired to manipulate the American election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Trump Said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cChina was killing our country. They were taking out $500 billion dollars a year.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"link-730b8571\">This is exaggerated. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The United States had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/foreign-trade\/Press-Release\/current_press_release\/exh20.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$336 billion trade deficit<\/a> in goods and services with China in 2017, and a trade deficit in goods alone of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/foreign-trade\/balance\/c5700.html#2017\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$376 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Curious about the accuracy of a claim?
